Winterize your garage door

Winterize your garage door

Snow and ice can cause damage to your garage door. There are ways to protect your garage door and opener after it has snowed. Ice forms mainly around the garage door threshold. This needs to be removed before trying to operate the door. If not, your motor has to work harder in order to open the door and this can cause the mechanisms to overheat. It can also pull your garage door out of alignment.

Make sure not to pile snow around your garage door, especially the threshold. The threshold is a very important component of your door and damage can mean a lapse in energy efficiency. If you have a plowing service, make sure to communicate with them as well. Let them know to leave a significant amount of space in front of your garage door.

Before closing your garage door, make sure the snow has been cleared. If there is snow in the way, the door may not reach the threshold. This may cause your door to reverse because of the safety mechanism. Also, closing your door on top of a pile of snow could cause damage and you may not be able to operate the door at all.

Taking small measures will ensure that your garage door and opener are working as they should during the cold and snow. If you do find that you encounter a problem, please give Apple Door Systems a call! 804-674-7774 #teamappledoor
