Many homeowners have the luxury of opening their door with the push of a button using an automatic door opener. However, with the threat of impending winter storms this season, it is important to know what to do if you find yourself without power.

First, locate your garage door opener’s emergency release which is attached to a red pull cord. Pull this cord down and away from your garage door. Please note that this is best done when the door is in the closed position as it could otherwise come crashing down once disconnected. Also, it is important to remember that you must manually lock and unlock your garage door while using it in manual mode.

Once power has been restored, you can reconnect your opener by pulling the red pull cord down and towards the door. Next, use your remote or wall station to operate the door and it will snap back into place. If you locked your door while in manual mode, you must unlock the door before reconnecting your motor so that it does not cause damage to your door.

Another option to consider is installing a battery backup. These handy devices allow you open and close your garage door with your automatic door opener even in the event of a power outage for up to 24 hours or 50 cycles. For pricing or more information, call Apple Door Systems at (800) 277-3667.
